Data Analytics & Operations Reporting Intern
What is Maryland Benefits? Maryland Benefits (formerly MD THINK) is a multi-agency endeavor to transform and continuously improve the state's health and human services digital data and technology capabilities.
What is the mission of Maryland Benefits? The mission of Maryland Benefits is to enable more effective, efficient, and safe delivery of vital services to Marylanders through transformative, integrated digital government capabilities.
Responsibilities:
A Cloud Infrastructure • Operations Intern will focus on building, maintaining, and evolving the operational KPI dashboard and metrics reporting framework that the Deputy Director of Cloud Infrastructure • Operations uses for leadership briefings, Director touchpoints, and agency conversations. The intern will be directly involved in defining metrics, collecting operational data, producing weekly and monthly reports, and performing system error log analysis across the Maryland Benefits cloud infrastructure portfolio.
The duties and responsibilities of a Cloud Infrastructure • Operations Intern include:
- Defining and building the operational KPI dashboard from the ground up — working with the Deputy Director and Operations Program Manager to identify the specific metrics to track, including uptime, SLA compliance, patching completion rate, ticket aging, and incident frequency by environment.
- Producing a weekly operational metrics summary — a structured one-page view of KPI trends across all six platform environments — for the Deputy Director's use in Director touchpoints.
- Analyzing automated system error logs twice weekly (Monday and Friday) — identifying patterns, recurring errors, and anomalies; producing a structured readout for the Deputy Director.
- Maintaining the incident frequency log — tracking all incidents by severity, environment, and resolution time; producing a monthly incident trend summary with MTTR and MTTD analysis.
- Analyzing patching completion data after each bi-monthly patching cycle — calculating completion rates by environment, identifying missed or late patches, and producing a compliance summary.
- Authoring a data dictionary — defining each KPI, how it is measured, where the data comes from, and how often it is updated — so reporting continues accurately after the intern departs.
- Auditing the current state of operational data — identifying where data is incomplete, inconsistent, or missing entirely — and producing a data quality report with recommendations.
Requirements:
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Gains for Intern:
- Practical, hands-on experience building and maintaining an operational analytics and reporting framework in a live government environment.
- KPI framework design — defining metrics, measurement approaches, and data collection processes from scratch.
- Dashboard design and build for executive-level audiences using professional visualization tools.
- Error log pattern analysis and classification methodology.
- Incident trend analysis including MTTR and MTTD tracking.
- Patching compliance data collection and reporting.
- Data dictionary authoring and reporting SOP development.
- Data quality auditing and gap analysis in a complex multi-environment infrastructure context.
- Direct mentorship from the Deputy Director of Cloud Infrastructure • Operations.

- Morale Building: Internships serve as a powerful tool for building employee morale as it makes every day a pass-on-your-knowledge day to an enthusiastic student eager to contribute.
